photos from birthday party at carol's pub!! :)

denise assaults mehow, then conceals herself with accomplice liz by hiding behind their stamped hands:

mehow remembers a secret and whispers it tenderly to liz:

niles and i taunt the camera while denise and mehow torture one of my birthday presents:

paul grins a wicked grin while the mysterious man in black skulks in a corner:

denise gives liz some sweet, sweet sugar. bj waits for a chance to do the same to jasna.

"dave is not funny," liz thinks. "now bj, bj is funny."

carol's pub house band rocks your face. this is my face being rocked, and niles trying to comfort me. awww. :)

at the request of my sister, i've decided to do illustration friday this week. :D this is an illustration i did ages ago based on a photo of my grandfather from his WWII days.

hola, frijolas. i added a few things to the comics page; the first few pages of oxen cry, which you can read in barrelhouse magazine, and the first few pages of vea, which i'll have printed and for sale here in a week or two.

also, we ended up at a bookstore on clark street on saturday, when i didn't intend to buy anything at all, but i ended up getting 6 comic books. i got igort's '5 is the perfect number', two drawn & quarterly anthologies, two thomas ott books, and the lives and times of archy and mehitabel. which is not strictly comics, george herriman illustrations notwithstanding, but i fell in love with these poems years ago and i couldn't pass it up.

in other news, my accordion was broken - a few stuck chord buttons - but i totally and 100% fixed it all by myself. maybe i'll upload some photos of what she looks like on the inside. also in other news, the guy who played "thor" from dawson's garage in adventures in babysitting? TOTALLY VINCENT D'ONOFRIO. i had no idea.

love and rockets,

sarah

when we were wee, one of the recipes my mom used to make for us was frito chili pie. which, basically, was a bunch of fritos with chili on top of them. and sometimes melted cheese on top of that. she'd make it with wolf brand chili, which i haven't been able to find in chicago, but that's no big, becoz my brother made up an excellent recipe for vegetarian chili. and when i don't have the energy to make his recipe, i like to get the vegetarian chili man chili.

AAAAAAANyway. the other night i was feeling in need of some comfort foods, so i decided to make some frito chili pie, only i enhanced the recipe. it worked out so well i made it again last night for niles, and it was so pretty i even took photos of it.

first you make your chili. i got the chili man chili, and chopped up a million other things - red onions, portobello mushrooms, red peppers, jalapenos, etc - to juice it up a little. i also added some red wine vineager and some paprika and chili powder, coz let's face it, no canned chili is ever as spicykicky as you want it to be. then i made some mexican rice, all spicy and with corn and peppers and stuffs in it. i don't have the neato shallow chili bowls my mom did, and my japanese bowls are too deep for this recipe, so i used plates. i put the rice in a ring around the plate, fritos in the well of the ring, and poured chili on top of them so it went to the edges of the rice. then i put melty cheese on top of the chili, and sour cream and scallions on top of that. IT WAS 100% ROCKPANTS. here's what it looked like:

it was almost too pretty to eat. except it smelled really good, so we ate it. the end.
