please give a warm welcome to the newest household kitty, The Venerable Madame Cheng I Sao, Widow Pirate. you may call her mrs. cheng, although dave calls her "the widder".
she's missing an eye, no doubt a souvenir from one of her grand adventures on the high seas, terrorizing the 19th century chinese coast. or it could be from an evil dog that attacked her. the shelter thought it was a dog. but they also thought her name was "bella", so they could be wrong on both counts. :)
greta does not like The Venerable Madame Cheng I Sao, Widow Pirate just yet, but we are confident that with patience over the next few weeks, the two will become fast friends, and perhaps build a pirate fleet of their own.

but seriously. no more politics. for, like, 45 minutes at least. in the meantime, the first ever issue of barrelhouse magazine is coming out soon, and i have a piece in it, written by the ludicrously skilled mr. darby larson and comicked by me. you should pre-order it coz there's lots of other cool stuff in it too.

Ashcroft, in a five-page, handwritten letter to Bush, said, "The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved."
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
:D
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
:D
ON THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, AND THE LEGISLATION OF MORALITY.
this, cats and kittens, is what i am talking about when i speak of the emerging fundamentalist pseudo-theocracy:
here and
here and
here and
here and
here and prolly many more.
the issue here is not secularism attacking christianity, it's vice versa. the whole beauty of america's separation of church and state is that YOU CAN WORSHIP WHATEVER YOU FEEL LIKE and NO ONE WILL FORCE YOU TO WORSHIP ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANNA. there's this weird sense of self-perceived persecution i hear from a lot of devout christians these days, and it baffles me. no one is telling you not to be christian. no one is trying to outlaw christianity or stop you from going to church or arrest you for praying.
it DOES appear, however, that there's a push from evangelical and fundamentalist voices to force christian beliefs on non-christians. it's entirely within your rights to believe that contraceptives are wrong, but denying contraceptives to a patient is overstepping your bounds. NO ONE is trying to mess with the snake handlers' right to handle poisonous snakes, but criminy, how is forcing everyone else to handle poisonous snakes the american way?

look at the rockpants new hat i finished last night!
Thursday, November 04, 2004
ooooookay. i'm a lot less angry today. we watched saved last night and i got a good night's sleep, and now i'm not nearly so apocalyptically miserable and furious. so. baleeted yesterday's little bout of vitriolic rage. replacing it with this, slightly more reasoned approach.
1) blue america doesn't understand red america, and vice versa. there seems little desire on either side to want to even TRY to understand the other.
2) i really, really, really hope i'm wrong about all the cassandra-esque doom and disaster i'm seeing in the next four years. REALLY.
3) if this is the beginning of a trend in america, and if it continues in this direction even after another four years, i will expatriate, and i will not feel bad about it. i refuse to live in a fundamentalist pseudo-theocracy, no matter what religion is sponsoring it. right now i'm thinking about montreal, if they'll take me.
or, maybe the nyc metrobloggers have the right idea:
just kidding.
sorta.
:)
